Trending Residential Interior Paint Colours

With 2021 moving towards the end, it is that time of the year again. Yes, it's time to dive into the world of colours and explore new ways in which we can paint and decorate our houses. But before doing that, here is a quick recap of painting and decorating ideas that went trending throughout 2021. As we know that 2021 was mostly about staying indoors thus, most of the paint colours that made it to the spotlight were either comforting and soothing or had a strong uplifting feel to them. Some of these include Ultimate grey and Illuminating Yellow from Pantone, Aegean Teal from Benjamin Moore, Sap Green from Farrow & Balls, and Edward Bulmer’s Indigo which had a velvety feel of its own.

Paint trends for 2022 are based on the same notion, your home should inspire you and every corner of your residence should provide you the sense of comfort, safety, and love that we need in our lives. Colours are of vital importance as they affect our emotions immensely. Hence, painting your home with Bright Skies, Dulux color of the Year 2022, can be a great welcome to the new year. The evocative nature of the color makes you believe that you are under a clear blue sky. This not only brings freshness to the room but also elevates the overall mood.

The creative director of Dulux UK had a similar take on the colour when she said “Right now, people want to feel revitalized and enjoy the freedoms that are returning to them, to look out and bring in new ideas. What better inspiration can we take than the endless skies around us?” Therefore, painting your place with bright skies is a sign of optimism for the year coming ahead. Moreover, once applied even in small and narrow spaces it would make them feel spacious and comfortable to move around in.

The promise for a better upcoming year and a sense of optimism is also depicted in the colour range introduced by Little Green as they transition from greys and whites into a warmer, welcoming, and optimistic shades such as “Indian Yellow” and “Giallo”. Ruth Mottershead, Creative Director of the company elaborated this by saying” As we move towards 2022 the desire for warm, welcoming, and optimistic shades continues”. Let me remind you that shades of yellow were also trending for 2021 thus, you can never go wrong by painting a shade of yellow.

Decorating your doors and window panes with a lick of glossy paint is the new cool suggests Joa Studholme, the color curator at Farrow and Ball’s. A combination of white and stone Blue full Gloss is all about subtly making a statement. Studholme exclaimed that glossy paint “adds a modern feel with a suitably vintage flavour.”

Painting and Decorating experts at Crown are very focused on bringing a balance to our lives after all the uncertainty in the past years. The result is their new pallet of comforting colours which is believed to be inspired by rural landscapes. A key colour from the pallet is tan.  It has a peachy earthy tone to it. Hence, it is evident that earthy tones are the way forward. A little piece of information to add here, Pinterest disclosed that the search for terracotta walls increased by 86 percent in the UK in 2020. Therefore, these rich warm colors are one the most used paint colour by painters and decorators. Another new trend for decorating your walls is by painting the walls in multiple accenting colors. This is trend is called “layers” by Crown. It suggests the use of striking colour to highlight various features of your walls. Shades of red, blue, and green alongside other neutrals is another way of going about the décor of your home.

Overall, it can be said that paint trends are shifting towards warmer tones and soothing colours. So, chose a colour that suits you best as it is your home, your very own sanctuary.

Choosing The Right Colour

How to Choose the Right Interior Paint Colour

Whether you have just completed a new building or renovated an existing one, there is a need to paint your property, especially the interior. While you have put everyhing in the right place, you might be puzzled by what colour scheme of paint is right to use in your room.

The colour you use in your interior rooms says a lot about the room, such as how relaxing and lively the room is. Hence, it is important to know which colour palette is best to use.

Here are a few tips to help you find the right paint colour schemes:

5 Tips To Choose Interior Paint Colours

1.     Consider Your Furniture’s Colour

While you might have some specific colours in mind to choose for your interior, you may start with considering the colours of the existing furniture pieces in the room. Since you have multiple colours in the room, select three of those colours as your paint colours.

Choose the most significant colour for the wall and the other two – of the three colours – around the room in furnishings and fabric.

2.     Find Paint Colour Inspiration Online

When looking for the right paint colour scheme for your interior, you may want to check magazines and interior design websites for inspiration. Paint companies also have sites where you can source colour schemes. Other online platforms to find paint colour inspirations include Pinterest and Instagram.

3.     Create a Colour Scheme through Colour Theory

You can start your paint colour inspiration from colour theory. You don’t necessarily need to study colour theory to use this method to generate colour ideas. A colour wheel will help you out.

A colour wheel is a circle of different sectors with different colours, showing the relationships between colours.

If you are not satisfied with the colours on the wheel, you can make variations to the colours and choose their shades.

4.     Choose Neutral Colours

One easy way to choose a colour scheme for your interior is to settle for neutral colours. Neural colours can easily fit into any interior design with little effort. However, you can step up the game by being creative with neutral colours in your interior.

5.     Find Ideas in Artwork

You might not need to go for when choosing the best paint colour scheme for your room. The idea might be lying there in the room, such as in an artwork. Artworks are genius works from masters of colour and light, meaning a lot of effort has gone into selecting colours already.

Hence, an artwork might be a source of inspiration for paint colour ideas for your interior. If the exact colours don’t satisfy you, choose complementary colours to create your colour scheme.

Dramatic Transformations

Two areas of possible rising damp issues here;

After scrapping off the loose paint and efflorescence salts, sealing the area with Zinsser Gardz (sealant and Alkali resisting primer) and Zinsser BIN (shellac sealant paint) and then two coats of emulsion. This paint system should prevent the issue from coming back. The Zinsser Gardz bonds any friable suface and the Zinsser BIN will block any damp coming through. Breathable emulsion will allow for any moisture on the surface to evaporate keeping the damp at bay.

Hall Stairs and Landing

The Hall Stairs and landing is the most popular area by twice as much as any other area in a home according to my quickbooks stats. Due to its awkward heights and intricate spindles and large quantity of woodwork, the hall stairs and landing can be one of the more difficult areas for home owners to tackle themselves. Also with the narrow corridors and stair wells offer little room to avoid damage. This is very apparent in home with children and pets. Usually priced as three small rooms these areas aren’t for the small budgets but can make a huge impact on the way people feel in thier homes.

Peeling Paint

Here's a before and after of an exterior painting job I did recently in Ilkley. The paint has curled away from the previous coats, this is due to the lack of preparation and sanding prior to painting the top coat.

This is a common result of poor decorating where a lack of attention to the preparation has meant the paint has not got a good enough key for the paint to adhere, now it has become my job to start over. Using a machine sander I have managed to rub the previous coats off back to a firm state and then applying a suitable primer to satisfy the porosity of the bare wood. Then exterior wood fillers were used to make the paintwork as smooth as possible, a quick rub down before applying the undercoat. Another undercoat and then top coat finishes off the paint system.

Is The Sun Rotting Your Exterior Paintwork?

The Sun has a big part to play when it comes to the deterioration of your exterior Paintwork. The heat from the sun expands the paint, then as it cools it can split and moisture gets in behind the paint causing the wood to rot. Keeping the paintwork well prepared and painted often prevents this deterioration to occur especially on South facing sides of the property.

Woodstain on the other hand has slightly different properties. Unlike paint that sits on top in the wood, woodstain is medium build which means it both soaks into the wood and remains on top too. Woodstain is damaged by the uv in the sunlight which fades, drys and cracks the surface of the stain. Many Woodstains have a uv filter to prevent the sun damage.
